How-to · High-speed rail

The world's largest HSR network, in plain English.

48,000 km of track, trains up to 350 km/h, Beijing to Shanghai in 4.5 hours for $77. Here's how to book without a Chinese ID.

Booking — the only platform foreigners need

Use Trip.com (English, accepts foreign cards, ~$2 service fee per ticket). The official platform — 12306 — technically works with passports but the UI is Chinese-only and rejects most foreign cards. Don't bother.

Tickets open 15 days in advance. For Beijing↔Shanghai or Friday/Sunday departures in Tier-1 cities, book a week ahead. Off-peak weekday tickets are almost always available day-of.

At the station

  1. Arrive 40 minutes early. Big-city HSR stations are airport-sized.
  2. Security scan (bag through X-ray, water bottle sip).
  3. Passport at the gate — tap it on the reader, no paper ticket needed. Same passport you booked with.
  4. Find your platform on the big board; carriages are numbered on the platform floor.

Train classes

  • Second class — what 95% of travelers book. Comfortable, 3+2 seating, power outlets, tray table. Go with this.
  • First class — 2+2 seating, more legroom, ~50% more expensive. Worth it on 5+ hr rides.
  • Business class — lie-flat seats, lounge access, 3× the price. Skip unless you're on Beijing↔Shanghai overnight equivalent.

  • Shanghai → Hangzhou · 159 km · 45 min · $10

  • Xi'an → Chengdu · 660 km · 3h 15m · $40

By comparison, Tokyo → Osaka on the Shinkansen is similar distance and runs ~$98. See the full cost comparison.

Onboard

  • Wi-Fi is unreliable — a travel eSIM with 5G works better.
  • Food cart sells instant noodles, drinks, snacks. Pay with Alipay/WeChat. Better: buy something at the station before boarding.
  • Quiet enforced. No phone calls in your seat — use the vestibule.

Common questions

  • Can I refund? Yes via Trip.com. Free 8+ days out, then a sliding fee.
  • Lost passport? The station police office can issue a one-time temporary travel document for the ticket — but bring a photocopy as backup.
  • Luggage limit? 20 kg, but rarely weighed. A regular check-in suitcase is fine.

Pair this with the Alipay/WeChat setup and the 14-day itinerary for the full picture.
